Groundbreaking research unlocked

NWO, Constructing the Limes, Utrecht (NL)

For five years, the multidisciplinary team of the research project ‘Constructing the Limes’ investigated how the border of the Roman Empire functioned and continues to influence our time. In a concluding exhibition, visitors can explore the key findings and discoveries.

A broader perspective on the Limes

The Limes was long seen as a rigid boundary where the Roman Empire defended itself against the barbarians. This persistent but incorrect image is still used in public debates today and influences our thinking about borders. Using new technologies and discoveries from citizen scientists, researchers from various universities have broadened the perspective on this iconic frontier. Studio Louter has been commissioned to make these research findings accessible to a wide audience through an exhibition at Museum Valkhof.

An ode to science

In the exhibition, interactive installations will guide visitors through stereotypical depictions of the Limes found in school illustrations, comic books, and political speeches. Scientists and citizen scientists demonstrate how they study these stereotypes scientifically and how their findings can enrich and adjust our perception of the Limes.
