Delta Experience
Deltapark Neeltje Jans, Vrouwenpolder (NL), 2015
The clock ticks. A child sleeps. Outside, a storm howls. Then the window smashes and all hell breaks loose.
Why we need this dam
Deltapark Neeltje Jans is situated at the foot of the world’s biggest storm surge barrier. What's the story behind this mammoth structure? An impressive 3D panoramic animation lets visitors experience the all-destroying force of the water that caused the 1953 flood disaster.
The 1953 North Sea flood
It was the Netherlands’ worst natural disaster since the Second World War. Visitors relive the events of the night of 31 January 1953 in Zeeland – a historic tragedy of which no photographs exist. Digital technology allows us to see and experience how the waves of the North Sea swept away parts of the country.
The Delta Works
After the storm subsides, a cascade of archival images appears. They show the damage caused by the disaster, the subsequent reconstruction of Zeeland, and the building of the Delta Works. The educational presentation warns visitors of the threat posed by the water. Will the flood barriers be able to protect us in the future?
“I couldn't grasp it. I was terrified, and I felt for the mothers whose children drowned.”
