From magic lantern to iPhone
EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam (NL), 2014
All they really are is still pictures. But show them one after another in rapid succession and you get movement – otherwise known as film.
The history of film
In EYE Filmmuseum’s permanent historical exhibition, located in the ‘Panorama’, distinctive historical objects – a seventeenth century magic lantern, a nineteenth century mutoscope, a twentieth century Mitchell camera, a modern-day iPhone – illustrate the technological evolution of cinema. Five animated films show how they work in simple terms.
“Clear animated films explain how the devices work.”
