The republic of languages
Lân fan Taal, Leeuwarden (NL), 2017
Everything is language; language is everything. At Lân fan Taal, visitors could discover 6,720 languages, including Frisian, slang, braille, sign language and body language.
Year-long festival
Leeuwarden, Friesland, was designated as a European Capital of Culture in 2018. An important component of the festivities was Lân fan Taal: the Land of Languages. At this year-long festival centred around the city’s landmark Oldehove tower, stages, exhibits, installations and a main pavilion hosted an extensive programme of events celebrating the power and significance of multilingualism.
Manifesto
With the participating institutions, the Lân fan Taal creative team and the spatial designer Annika Ohlerich of Archetypisch, we developed a set of founding principles for Lân fan Taal in the form of a manifesto.
“It celebrates the world’s increasing diversity and multilingualism.”
