A destination for the future

At the request of the city of Rotterdam, the Maritime Museum drew up a master plan for 2035. This aspirational document will underpin a feasibility study on renovating the museum’s building. The future-oriented plan positions the museum as a relevant destination in the heart of Rotterdam, Europe’s maritime capital. At the same time, it portrays the museum as proud, limitless, self-aware, and full of guts and energy.

Expanding horizons

With the museum, and in consultation with the city and advisors, we developed the concept “The Maritime” as a basis for the master plan. The museum will become the maritime heart of Rotterdam: a place where visitors can expand their horizons. At the same time, it will expand its own horizons and tell a broader story than before – about shipping but also about the relationship between people and the sea.

A central meeting place

The Maritime (the museum, museum harbour and workspaces will become a key destination in Rotterdam, a place where the city, the shipping industry, and visitors come together. It will serve as a “safe harbour” where visitors can dive into the maritime world.
