The Case of Saul and David
Mauritshuis, The Hague (NL), 2015
The Mauritshuis is a leading research institution as well as a museum. An exhibition featuring a series of TED-style talks makes it clear.
A genuine Rembrandt?
A century ago, Rembrandt’s ‘Saul and David’ was regarded as one of the artist’s masterpieces. Fifty years later, it was concluded that the work was not one of his. In recent years, the Mauritshuis has carried out research and thoroughly restored the painting, which is now definitively attributed to Rembrandt. The results can be seen in a revamped exhibition.
Practicum 2.0
Complex high-tech research techniques are explained for the general public in an accessible way without omitting the scientific facts. We came up with a modern variation on the old-fashioned art show: a set of interactive TED talks.
Lectures
On four large video screens, passionate specialists discuss aspects of research such as attribution and iconography. As they watch the lectures, visitors can access additional information on iPads. It's a return of the old-fashioned practicum using the latest technology.
“A fine job. The structure is effective, the tone pleasant, the material fascinating.”
