Rogier van der Weyden Unveiled
Mauritshuis, The Hague (NL), 2018
The painting ‘The Lamentation of Christ’ needed restoring. Looked at through a conservator's eyes, it yielded up its secrets.
Anatomy lesson
The fifteenth century masterpiece ‘The Lamentation of Christ’, by the Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden, is the oldest painting in the Mauritshuis’s collection. With Studio Louter, the museum developed a plan to restore the work in public view, in the style of a historical anatomy lesson.
Down to the details
In the sterile surrounds of a temporary conservation studio, the painting resembled a patient on an operating table. Slowly, its rich original colours became visible again. Meanwhile, a life-size interactive touchscreen let visitors explore the work down to its smallest details. More screens provided additional information. In a film, the conservators explained how they would be going about their work.
“It’s a true voyage of discovery.”
