Het Rijk der Duizend Eilanden
Municipality of Dijk en Waard (NL), 2021
Countless little islands, as far as the eye can see. Once, market gardeners grew and auctioned their potatoes, onions and other vegetables here. Now it’s the place to discover the history of the newly amalgamated municipality of Dijk en Waard.
The power of heritage
Heritage can help to unite a new community and give it an identity. Aware of its power, the municipality of Dijk en Waard asked us to look at how the Museum BroekerVeiling could become a significant regional attraction that would enhance Dijk en Waard’s character.
Heritage values
We worked with the museum to map out its heritage values, the wider museum field, and the desired target groups. We used these to formulate three possible scenarios reflecting different levels of ambition, types of business operation, and positioning strategies. On the basis of these, we crafted a proposal that was presented to the town council.
A boat-based visitor experience
The chosen scenario envisions a local museum with regional appeal. The story Museum BroekerVeiling seeks to tell – a tale of the innovative cultivation of healthy produce – is a timely one. A unique visitor experience allows museumgoers to see the entire exhibition by boat. The plan is currently under consideration.
“This plan will do better justice to the museological and historical value. The museum will become attractive to a variety of target groups.”
