Nothing more intimate than a bag

Museum of Bags Amsterdam, Amsterdam (NL), 2018

Bags say a lot about their owners. It’s no wonder they’ve been beloved accessories for centuries. The Museum of Bags Amsterdam, unfortunately now closed, let visitors examine examples from down the ages.

The world’s biggest bag museum

With a collection of more than 5,000 bags, the museum was the largest of its kind in the world. To encourage visitors to view the bags and bag history in a new light, we developed an overarching concept: “the most intimate of accessories”. It guided us in the production of interactive installations and audiovisual material for the museum.

Your own iconic bag

Through film projections, visitors could see what it might be like to touch and use the displayed bags. Touchscreens let visitors explore the stories of the objects, their owners and their makers. They could even design their own iconic handbag and find out what it revealed about them. Because there’s much more to a bag than meets the eye.

“A static display of historical objects and captions has made way for lots of moving images that show us how bags were used and what that tells us about their users’ times and surroundings”
