On the Move
National Museum of Qatar, Doha (QA), 2022
The central Sahara, Qatar and Mongolia are home to nomadic peoples. The region’s often extreme living conditions require them to be highly creative and innovative.
Adaptability
Many people assume nomads live simply. Like all societies, however, they change with the times. ‘On the Move’ shows these cultures’ adaptability, complexity and beauty and the meaningful social relationships between people.

Social space
The exhibition gives visitors a glimpse of pastoralists’ lives. Three large tents and a touch app provide insight into the complex social rules they live by. Though a tent may seem small, each corner has its own function, and every member of the family knows his or her own role and place within it.

Living with animals
“Nomads” literally means “grazers of herds”. Animals play an important part in nomadic peoples’ lives. Museum visitors can learn how to tend herds and watch an animation showing the role falcons play in Qatar.
A source of inspiration
Exquisite objects and oral history films reveal the rich social, cultural and spiritual lives of the nomads. Above all, the exhibition shows how they have responded to political, economic, climatic and cultural change. In spite of their great adaptability, the nomads keep traditions alive. In this, they can serve as inspiration for the world.
“The exhibition traces the history of nomads not only in Qatar but also across the region, further cementing our commitment to bringing people together.”
