Valuable papers

Noord-Hollands Archief, Haarlem (NL), 2019

Joh. Enschedé was the official printer of Dutch banknotes. The company’s world-famous work is displayed and celebrated in a permanent exhibition.

Design your own money

With two centuries of cutting-edge expertise in printing, publishing and typecasting, Joh. Enschedé was the Netherlands' leading printer of banknotes, stamps and security documents. Three spatial installations show the company’s craftsmanship and the techniques used. Visitors can see an 18th-century printing press with a range of printed products, a display of typefaces designed by Enschedé, and a printer’s roll that reveals the layered colour composition of a banknote. They can even design their own currency, in the process discovering the craftsmanship hidden within everyday objects.

Fundraising

The Noord-Hollands Archief took charge of the printer Joh. Enschedé’s extensive, unique collection in 2015. The archive wanted to put the collection on permanent public display. Armed with a concept developed with Studio Louter and Todd van Hulzen, the archive raised the funds it needed. One installation was realised with the help of crowdfunding.

“The Enschedé collection belongs here, in its full extent. And now everyone can enjoy it.’’
